The Digital Heritage Simulation Technology for Korean Traditional Architectures

We are developing the digital heritage simulation technology that provides tools to reconstruct digital heritage buildings using geometric modeling, dynamic simulation, computer animation and computer-aided design(CAD) technologies. Using the technologies, our solution can generate 3D building-component models that constitute the heritage buildings and construct the building structures by assembling those components simulating the building construction process in reality. The digital heritage buildings constructed using this technology can be used to provide detailed technical information and expert knowledge about the heritage architectures and to conduct both of assembly simulation and physics simulation of the architectures. The technologies also provide capabilities necessary to restore damaged or lost components of the digital heritage buildings.

We developed application systems using the aforementioned core technologies for digital heritage reconstruction and simulation that are TouchBIM (Touch Building Information Modeling), X-Top(eXperiences from TOP view), and hETRIs(heritage tETRIs). TouchBIM is a touch screen kiosk system that provides heritage building assembly simulation capabilities. X-Top is a computer vision-based application system that reproduces the assembly process of Korean pagoda in the virtual world by tracking each building component used in the current assembly step in real time. hETRIs is a computer game software that allows users to experience the assembly process of Korean bracket structures ‘gong-po’ by playing the tetris-style game.
